Tips for Coaching Success
- Bring ALL of you to every
session: Allow a few extra minutes before the appointment
to disengage from the rest of your life. Get some fresh air,
meditate for a moment, or sit quietly and focus on your breathing so
you can be fully present for your coaching.
- Be prepared: Look
back over your life since the last coaching session. Where did you
stop short of "going for it"? What helped you move forward? Do you
see any patterns or trends? What do you want to focus or accomplish
on during today's session?
- Provide
an update: Organize your thoughts by writing down the
answers to the questions in #2 above, and/or these questions: [a]
What am I proud of accomplishing since our last call? [b] What am I
not so proud of? [c] What do I want to focus on during this session?
Email or fax it to me ahead of time so we're both on the same sheet
(literally!). Another benefit is that you don't have to take
valuable time during the session to fill me in on history or
background.
- Give me feedback:
Tell me what's working, what's not working and what you want more
of. Train me to be the best coach for you.
- Put power into your words:
Practice using empowering language during the coaching
session. Leave words like "should", "need" and "try" outside;
instead, say, "could", "want to" and "will".
- Manage your gremlin:
Coaching irritates your gremlin -- that little voice in the
back of your mind that wants to monitor, manage and control every
aspect of your life "for your own good". Turn the tables on your
gremlin and manage him/her with diligence. "Taming Your
Gremlin" by Rick Carson, is an excellent resource for
working with your gremlin.
- Stay in the game:
You may hit the wall at some point. It may seem counterintuitive,
but that's the time to lean into the coaching, not pull back. Keep
up with your coaching sessions, even if you feel overwhelmed,
pressed for time or discouraged. I am here to help you get
through the tough parts.
- Balance insight with
action: Look for ways to transform your insights into
meaningful action. An "AHA!" doesn't go anywhere until you move it
from awareness into action.
- Take notes:
Record your insights and commitments for the week. Keep your notes
organized and review them for inspiration.
- Be 100% responsible:
I can coach with you, but can't "do" coaching to you.
If you and I both take 100% responsibility for our coaching
relationship, we'll co-create an awesome experience.
Bonus
Tip:
Lighten up! A little humor can really help put
things into perspective.
